The Before You Say It Checklist

Use this simple checklist before you send a message, answer too quickly, or start a conversation that matters. It helps you pause, understand the situation, choose your tone, and find one sentence you can actually say without overexplaining.

Before you say the thing, take one quiet minute to understand what you are really trying to do. This checklist helps you sort the situation, the person, the boundary, and the tone: so your words come out clearer, calmer, and more honest.

Questions to ask yourself before you say it

  1. What am I actually trying to say?
    • Not the long version. The real point.
  2. What happened that made this conversation necessary?
    • Name the situation clearly without adding every detail.
  3. Is this a one-time awkward moment, or a repeated pattern?
  4. What do I want to avoid?
    • A fight, overexplaining, apologizing too much, sounding cold, getting pulled into a debate, or saying yes when I mean no.
  5. What boundary matters here?
    • What do I need to protect: my time, my child, my home, my energy, my relationship, my dignity, or my peace?
  6. What do I need from the other person?
    • An apology, a change, a clear answer, respect, space, help, or simply to hear me.
  7. What kind of person am I dealing with?
    • Are they usually kind, defensive, clueless, controlling, sensitive, avoidant, selfish, or reasonable?
  8. How much explanation does this person actually deserve?
    • Do they need context, or do they only need the boundary?
